Applied Research Strategy
Unlike massive research universities that cast a wide net, Kingsman International College focuses on High-Impact Niche Research. We utilise our agility and our location to conduct applied research that bridges the gap between theoretical academia and industrial application.
Our research output is primarily driven by our postgraduate cohort and faculty, often working in tandem with the private sector companies residing in the Oulu Technopolis.
Key Research Clusters
1. The Northern Connectivity Lab
Leveraging Oulu’s reputation as the home of radio technology, this cluster focuses on:
- Edge Computing in Remote Areas: How to maintain high-speed data processing in geographically isolated and climatically harsh environments.
- IoT Resilience: Testing the durability of Internet of Things devices under extreme thermal stress (-30°C to +20°C cycles).
2. Centre for Arctic Sustainable Design (CASD)
This interdisciplinary group combines our Design and Economics faculties to study:
- Psychological Architecture: How indoor lighting and spatial design impact mental health during the Polar Night (Kaamos).
- Material Lifecycle: Researching biodegradable alternatives to synthetic insulation materials, utilising local Nordic biomass.
Student Involvement
At Kingsman, research is not reserved for PhD candidates.
- Undergraduate Research Opportunity Programme (UROP): Second-year undergraduate students can apply to work as junior research assistants during the summer term.
- The Kingsman Journal: A peer-reviewed academic journal managed and edited by our student body, publishing exceptional papers from our Sixth Form and Undergraduate cohorts.
